Triumph Over Adversity: An Inspiring Charity Cycle Journey

In a remarkable display of determination and courage, Nick Apperley, a British man living with motor neurone disease (MND), has completed a grueling charity cycle on his custom ICE Trike. This incredible achievement not only highlights Nick's indomitable spirit but also raises awareness and funds for MND research.

THE CHALLENGE
Nick embarked on a 444-mile journey, cycling through picturesque towns and challenging terrains, proving that physical limitations do not define one’s ability to make a difference. The ICE Trike, specifically designed to accommodate his needs, became more than just a mode of transport—it was a symbol of resilience and hope.

THE MOTIVATION
Diagnosed with MND in June 2023, Nick refused to let the disease dictate his life. Instead, he channeled his energy into this cycling challenge, inspired by the support of his family, friends, and the MND community. His goal was twofold: to demonstrate that life with MND can still be fulfilling and active, and to raise much-needed funds for MND research and support services.

THE JOURNEY

Nick’s journey was filled with both physical and emotional highs and lows. From the thrill of starting his journey to the exhaustion of long days on the road, each mile was a testament to his strength. Along the way, Nick was met with overwhelming support from the local communities, fellow cyclists, and MND advocates. His journey became a beacon of hope, drawing attention to the need for more research and better support for those living with MND.

THE IMPACT

By completing this charity cycle, Nick has now raised over £37,000 for MND research. These funds will go towards finding a cure and improving the quality of life for those affected by the disease. Moreover, his journey has sparked conversations about MND, inspiring others to contribute in any way they can.

A MESSAGE OF HOPE

Nick's journey is more than a personal triumph; it’s a message of hope for the entire MND community. It shows that even in the face of debilitating illness, one can still achieve extraordinary feats. Nick’s story is a reminder that the human spirit is unbreakable, and with determination and support, anything is possible.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Nick's journey might be over, but the fight against MND continues. You can support this cause by donating to MND research, participating in awareness campaigns, or simply sharing Nick's story. Every bit helps in the quest to find a cure and improve the lives of those living with motor neurone disease.

Nick says:

Since my MND diagnosis, due movement I wasn’t able to get on and off my road bike and eve if I did I couldn’t increase my cadence or power to go up hills. Plan B was a step through electric, but I couldn’t get on one & if I was helped wasn’t able to balance it when it came to rest, so fortunately I found ICE tricycle, and started talking to Paul Halinan (Adatp-E) who has been great. I really struggle to walk but my e-assist ICE trike with enviolo automatic gears hits the spot and whether it is the non-weight bearing renumber position of not but I am just able to pootle along at 11-12 mph quite readily.

Out cycle was 444 miles from Suffolk to Sennen, started on 9th June and finished on Saturday 15th, following. Lovely meandering route across some lovely English countryside. So far we have raised just over 33k for three MND charities.
